【BASIC LOGISTICS IN VIETNAM⑥】 Air Transport (Air Freight / Courier)

As the sixth in our series of basic explanations on logistics in Vietnam, this time we would like to explain Air Freight and Courier.

Air freight is the most suitable mode for short delivery times. Compared to ocean freight, air freight is faster but more expensive.
There are two major types of air freight: air freight and courier. Both are based on chargeable weight (actual weight in kg or volumetric weight, whichever is greater ).
The volumetric weight is calculated as follows

Volumetric Weight (kg) = Volume {Length (cm) x Width (cm) x Height (cm) } / 6,000

Air Freight is basically transported by passenger flights that we usually take. In this case, the cargo is loaded in the cargo compartment under the seat, but there are also
cargo-only flights and cargo-only airlines. Passenger flights are more frequent and have a more flexible schedule, but when loaded on passenger flights, each airline has its own regulations
regarding the total value of the three sides of the cargo. As with ocean freight, there are direct flights and transit flights. Arrangements, including stops at airports, can be organized.

Next, a similar service is international courier service (courier). DHL, FedEx, and UPS are well-known international mega-integrators, but the common feature is that they are based on
door-to-door transportation, which is faster than Air Freight. In normal times, the speed is overwhelmingly fast: 1 to 3 days in Asia, and 3 to 4 days in Europe and the United States.
On the other hand, when problems occur in customs clearance, it is difficult to control the integrator’s consistent arrangements, and it often takes time to resolve the problem, which can spoil the speed.

Comparison Table

Finally, there are a few points to consider. First, please check if you need to arrange the Door to Door transportation.
Next, compare lead times and costs. In the case of air freight, freight rates are especially a matter of chance and should be compared on a case-by-case basis,
but in general, use courier for small-lot cargo and documents, and air freight for other than small-lot cargo.

In addition, if you require more speed than a courier, there are hand-carry arrangements. Since the cargo is handled as passenger’s baggage, it is the most speedy way to handle the cargo,
but it is also the most expensive. We are happy to consult with you about hand-carry services.
