News Letter 024 No Cargo Handling at Japanese Ports During Year-End to New Year Period

Thank you very much for your continued support.

This is a newsletter from Dragon Logistics.

Today, we would like to inform you of a recent update regarding the subject matter. This announcement is particularly relevant for those residing in Japan or involved in import and export operations to and from Japan.

The Japan Harbor Transportation Association announced on the 13th that there will be no cargo handling during the year-end and New Year period for FY2024. Since 2001, cargo operations have been conducted during this period each year; however, due to unresolved labor-management negotiations, this will be the first suspension in over 20 years. (Exceptions apply to certain essential services, such as lifeline-related cargo.)

Currently, the announced schedule is as follows, with all port gates expected to close during the specified period:

  • Final Operation of the Year: Night cargo handling on December 30 (until 4:00 AM, December 31)
  • Operations Resume: January 5

While specific announcements from individual shipping companies are still pending, concerns are rising over potential disruptions, including increased congestion due to vessel delays (exacerbated by the ongoing situation in the Red Sea), cargo backlogs, and possible port omissions as schedules are adjusted.

For those planning export or import operations involving Japan, we recommend building schedules with enough flexibility and staying updated with the latest information.
